Morning Dove’s therapeutic riding lesson program is modeled after the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH) guidelines for accredited operating centers. Therapeutic riding lessons at Morning Dove are conducted by a PATH certified instructor with the assistance of trained volunteers. Therapeutic riding lessons are planned with the individual’s educational, physical, social and recreational goals in mind. Participants with a wide array of disabilities are active in this program, which comprises the core of Morning Dove’s services. Lesson activities may include developing basic riding skills, exercises, games and riding the trails. Note: our riders will participate in BOTH mounted and unmounted activities focused on building the communication, social and physicals skills they need. Our experience and the experience of therapeutic programs across the country show that their are significant benefits gained through all (mounted and unmounted) equine-assisted therapies.
Prospective participants or their families should contact Liz Coit, Executive Director at email@example.com or 317-733-9393 to get more information, discuss your specific needs and arrange for a visit and evaluation.
Rider application forms can be downloaded through the website, or mailed by calling our office at 317-733-9393. Once all forms are completed and returned to us, our staff will meet with the applicant (and their family as appropriate) to assess the applicant’s eligibility.
Once an applicant is accepted in the program, therapeutic goals are established and progress is documented. Most participants have one 45 minute group lesson each week for the length of the session (see calendar for our specific schedule). The majority of our riders continue their lessons from one session to the next – spring through fall.
Therapeutic Riding participants ride each week over the course of session: Spring (10 weeks), Summer (10 weeks), Fall (13 weeks) and Winter Fun Week (2 weeks). Weekly 45 minute lessons are offered in groups of 2-4 depending on the needs of our riders. Occassionally 30 minute private lessons may be recommended by the instructor. Lesson activities may include developing basic riding skills, exercises, games, horse care and grooming and riding the trails.
FEES: Lessons are $37 if paying with check or cash; $38 when using a card. Lessons are offered in full sessions only; payment plans are available.
*Fees are kept as low as possible to provide access to the greatest number of riders. Depending on the size of the lesson group, program fees cover only 40-60% of the operating costs of Morning Dove. Morning Dove raises the difference through donations and fundraisers. Please go to the Giving section of this website to learn more about how you can help!
